Private First Class Winfred C. Royster, 28, of Route 5, Durham, North Carolina, has returned to the United States after fighting the Japs on New Georgia and Bougainville, in the Solomons. Closest call he had, said the 37th Infantry Division mortar man, was on New Georgia when 10 Jap mortar shells fell around his foxhole withing a few seconds. He wears the Combat Infantryman Badge, awarded for exemplary conduct in action against the enemy, and has the Purple Heart.
